Stalagmites,
chemical kinetics of calcite deposition, and climate
Stalagmites
have become important proxies of paleo-climate by use of ?18O data.
However, much information in morphology and growth rates is also related
to climatic changes and may be used as supplementary information.
Based on the geochemistry of water, dripping to the speleothem and
depositing calcite, principles of stalagmite growth are established. From
these a computer model is constructed that models growth and morphology of
stalagmites. This model is applied to some climatic scenarios (e.g.
VOSTOK) to show how climatic signals may influence growth rates and
diameters of stalagmites.
